Job Summary:
The Police Dispatcher is responsible for receiving and transmitting emergency and non-emergency calls, as well as dispatching appropriate personnel to respond to incidents. The incumbent will operate communication equipment, maintain accurate records, and provide exceptional customer service in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, obtaining accurate and detailed information from callers.
2. Dispatch and coordinate appropriate police units, ensuring efficient response to incidents.
3. Monitor and operate various communication systems, including two-way radios, telephones, and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) software.
4. Maintain accurate records of all calls received, actions taken, and information provided, adhering to established protocols and procedures.
5. Collaborate with other emergency service providers, such as fire and medical personnel, to ensure effective handling of incidents requiring multi-agency response.
6. Provide clear and concise updates to police officers and other personnel regarding incidents and related information.
7. Monitor alarm systems, CCTV cameras, and other security devices, promptly notifying relevant personnel of any suspicious activities or security breaches.
8. Follow established protocols for handling critical incidents, including coordinating with emergency services and providing appropriate support to callers.
9. Provide exceptional customer service by demonstrating empathy, professionalism, and maintaining a calm demeanor during stressful situations.
10. Maintain a comprehensive understanding of department policies, procedures, and applicable laws to ensure compliance and effective communication.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information accurately, concisely, and with clarity.
3. Strong multitasking and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and respond quickly to changing situations.
4. Proficient in the use of computers and technology, including computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems and other relevant software.
5. Exceptional ability to remain calm and composed under high-pressure situations and effectively manage stress.
6. Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze information, evaluate options, and make sound decisions.
7. Active listening skills, with the ability to extract relevant information from callers while maintaining control of the conversation.
8. Ability to work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues and emergency service providers to achieve common goals.
9. Familiarity with law enforcement procedures, emergency response protocols, and knowledge of criminal justice terminology.
10. Flexibility to work on a rotating shift schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.
